St Brannock LogoNorth Devon History

The St Brannock Society was founded in the 1980s by a group of Guild of Devonshire Ringers who met informally in and around the Barnstaple area for method practices on Tuesday evenings. The constitution of the Society offers membership to any ringer who is a member of the Guild of Devonshire Ringers who is, or at any time in the past has been, domiciled in the broad area of the North and North West of Devon.

Head Quarters

St Brannock Society members regard the church of St Brannock, Braunton as their base. The pleasant, rather old fashioned chamber with a peal of eight bells, tenor 16cwt, provides wall space for notices, method diagrams and other items of Society interest. It should be emphasised however, that members support many other towers in the North Devon area, often ringing in the style of call change ringing practiced by Devon Association Members on Sundays and for Association Competitions.

Aims and Activities

The Society organises a regular method practice on Tuesday evenings at towers in the North Devon area. Usually this practice is held at the church of St Brannock, Braunton on the first and third Tuesdays in the month from 7.30pm to 9.00pm. The practices endeavour to offer all ringers a progression route in method ringing from relatively elementary methods through to spliced surprise major. As far as is possible in a large geographical area, in which method ringers are widely scattered, the Master arranges alternate Tuesday practices at other towers across the area. Occasionally practices are held specifically to link up with other centres of ringing in the North and North West area of Devon.

The Society has always organised an annual dinner in November and an outing in June and many peals and quarter peals have been rung by members of the Society.

Officers of the Society

The Society members annually elect a Master and Deputy Master who jointly direct the programme for the practices, a President who presides at the annual dinner and is chair person for meetings, a Secretary and a Treasurer.

Fund Raising

Society members have always embraced fund raising social events. This has given rise to a regular annual contribution to the Devon Church Bell Restoration Fund as well as establishing a substantial Millennium Fund.

Ringers visiting North Devon will be very welcome at the St Brannock Society practices.
