Young
Ringers' Spring Outing
April 13th 2012
A spring outing for Devon young
ringers was planned and eagerly anticipated: we would be
lounging on the beach at Lyme Regis in the hot sun, fish & chip
papers in hand…
Unfortunately it rained all day,
but never mind! Morning towers visited were the easy six at
Kilmington, and the rather light six at Shute. We crossed into
Dorset and congregated in Lyme Regis for lunch, most of us
managing to squeeze into a fish & chip café, where the
traditional fare went down well with mushy peas and hot tea.
Fossil shops were visited and the rough sea briefly glimpsed, as
the rain was whipped into our faces.

The reception at Lyme Regis tower
was overwhelmingly friendly, and we were made most welcome. Amy
played the organ, and the ringing was followed by afternoon tea
(and lots of cake!) in the church hall, where we were
entertained by the Nicholsons’ lively prancing dog, and
attempted to ‘lap’ plain hunt on the local handbells.
The group at Lyme Regis
Young ringers on the day unusually
fell into two distinct groups in terms of experience: 5 or 6 of
them ringing 10-bell methods, and the other 5 in the early
stages as ringers, just consolidating their handling. It was
however lovely to be joined by these very new young ringers,
mostly from Cruwys Morchard and one from Kilmington, and we look
forward to seeing their progress over the years to come.
