Combined Young Ringers in Plymouth
O
ctober 8th 2011

For their autumn outing on 8th October, Devon Young Ringers decided to visit Plymouth, and combine with the 'Modern Society of Plymouth Youths' on their own turf. Several young people are members of both groups anyway! Throw in a few over-30's and some 27 people were involved on the day.

Most of the young ringers at Stoke Damerel.

Ringing was at Laira, Compton Gifford (always simply referred to as 'Emmanuel'), Stoke Damerel and St Budeaux. The ringing was of a high standard and there was literally no shortage of Cambridge Major ringers, though it was also good to see a six year old ringing on a huge pile of boxes, and a young man who’d only been ringing two months getting to grip with the flighty Stoke bells. Most people got full marks on the ‘Dawlish Challenge’: ringing a whole pull of rounds, all moving one to the left and doing the same on each bell in turn, without failing to stand first time.

Playing games!

Enjoying lunch and trying some handbells

Lunch was in the Rising Sun near Emmanuel, which can’t be beaten for cheap prices and large portions. Here the coloured toy handbells came out for methods and tunes, and Mark was surprised by a birthday cake full of candles. Well, he is nearly 30.

With the Plymouth Youths involved, things became more bizarre in the afternoon: who could fit most sweets in their mouth at once? Someone got very near to 50! Then a game of picking up a box with no hands, the box being made smaller each time. Trousers were split in the process.

What a fantastic day. Thank you tower captains for having us, and Plymouth Youths for showing us a good time!
