Fireworks
Party - Exeter Branch Saturday 8 November 2008.
How welcoming it was to arrive at the warm
and cosy home of our hosts - ‘the Tucker family’ and we were all
amazed and grateful that the torrential rain, which many of us had
travelled through, stopped just in time for the bonfire to be lit.
It was surprising too, that the fire seemed to burn so well
despite the weather conditions, but we were later told by Graham
that the timber had been covered (perhaps for several months!) to
keep it dry. Nearly forty of us ventured outside to the paddock to
be warmed by the glow of the fire and to witness the lighting of
what seemed like hundreds of fireworks that streaked off into the
clear night sky. It really was a spectacle, made even more
enjoyable by the backdrop, a star studded black sky. Being a
relatively recent city dweller, I also enjoyed seeing nature’s own
night-time show again.
Back indoors, Lesley had already cooked
ample quantities of scrumptious food, chicken pieces, sausages,
beans and roast potatoes, along with a huge bowl of punch, which
was also delightful. The atmosphere was both very relaxing and
convivial, with everyone enjoying the opportunity to talk to
friends, some of whom they hadn’t perhaps seen for some time.
Thanks must go to all those who travelled
far in the dreadful weather to be there, also to those who ate
loads of carrots the night before, in order to see what they were
doing in lighting the fireworks safely, the photographer(s) who
contributed and of course our hosts, who once again provided the
lovely venue, food, drink and atmosphere.
