Peter Bill writes...

For the fourth year in a row a group from Devon and Somerset have been sampling a mini ring in foreign parts. This year we went North of the Border to Nairn, near Inverness, where Peter Shipton has a 1cwt ring of 8 cast by Eijsbouts of Holland in a purpose built Campanile in his garden.

Peal band (l-r): Margaret Chapman, Richard Newman, Peter Bill, Lester Yeo, Lesley Tucker, Brian Mounjoy, Graham Tucker, Matthew Hilling

As in previous years we were blessed with excellent weather (at least until our final day) and scored one peal and two quarter peals on what proved to be quite challenging bells. Peal and quarter peal details below.

We also had plenty of time to explore the local countryside including a visit to the battlefield of Culloden where there is a very informative Visitor’s Centre and a self guided tour of the battlefield, although Margaret had to resort to desperate measures to do this.

On our return to Nairn three of us investigated a sign to the Ardclach Bell Tower and were able to grab a ring of one deep in the Highland countryside where a bell had been removed from the church set in a secluded wooded valley and installed in a tower on top of the hill, presumably in order that the sound would carry further.

On our final day a number of us were able to ring at Inverness Cathedral and even had time before our flight home to go spotting Bottlenosed Dolphins in the Moray Firth, have a look at the Caledonian Canal and Loch Ness (no monsters spotted there).

We are most grateful to Peter and Aileen Shipton for their kind hospitality and helping with the arrangements and especially for booking us into accommodation near the Scottish CAMRA pub of the year where the food was as good as the beer!
